Hmmm, that is very strange. Perhaps you could let it dry out completely for a few weeks before washing it again?

I can't think of how you would get worms of any type in a coffee machine... Good luck!

Hi everyone,
I'm desperate about my coffee machine first because there's a leak (which is annoying but no big deal) but most of all because I keep on cleaning it and every two days I find small worms in the water under the machine and also in the container above which you put your cup. They are very small but still disgusting , I tried to clean the machine but they won't go. I looked up on the internet to see if someone has the same problem but apparently it's not common. I'm resigned to go and buy a new one but I'm curious about those small worms, I can't find them on the web, does anyone know where they come from, what they are called?I thank you for your answers!!!!

Thanks for sharing this with us. It was really interesting.

Any chance you'd like to right up a post/article on the benefits and dangers/risks of using carb cleaner? I'd love to put it up on the front page of this website, but I don't really know much about it. You also have a GREAT way of writing.

The more info, the better, and it will be viewed by about 2,000 people a day I reckon, (hence the need for a lot of info on the risks :-) )

Hello fellow maggot fighters,

Just wanted to share my story and what worked best for me. It was just 3 hours ago when I went to take out the trash. Upon opening the trash bin I saw hundreds of maggots crawling around inside. I had no experience with this before and was absolutely disgusted.

First, I tried raid, the kind that kills ants. I sprayed all of the maggots down real good and went inside to collect the rest of the trash. About 5-10 minutes later I go back outside to check and they are still alive and desperately trying to crawl out of the can. I had no more raid and didn't really know what to do. I tried a couple of other things like scrubbing bubbles (foaming bathroom cleaner) and pouring bleach all over them. This pushed all the maggots to the bottom of the trash bin and I thought I had won. I took my can to the curb and let it sit. I let it rest for 15 minutes and checked back on the bin and they were back!! Crawling up from the depths...These things are resilient! I was clueless. I thought to use the carb/throttle body cleaner I had in my garage but figured it would just make it easier for them to climb out by degreasing the sides of the trash bin. It is a good thing I was wrong! After finding this site (thank you to the creators!!!!) and reading through some things on it (thank you to the people who posted!!!!!), I quickly grabbed the carb cleaner.

The carb/throttle body cleaner worked extremely well, killing the maggots within 10 seconds of contact. I covered pretty much every surface inside the bin and shot down the strays on and around the bin and where it had been. After a couple minutes not a single one was left moving!

Please use caution and read all of the warnings on the label before you use this stuff, it can be harmful. You can probably find it at any store that stocks automotive parts for a couple bucks: walmart, pep boys, advance auto parts, etc. The specific brand I used was Valvoline SYN carb/throttle body cleaner. I hope that helps!

Again a big thank you to the creators of this website and the people who have posted their stories!!! I am now maggot free and have the knowledge to stay that way!! :)

Don't worry about the maggots in the guy's head, he was a homeless man who had an open wound that he didn't clean.

I'm not sure about the organic pesticide, they are pretty resilient. A lot of people have found stuff like carburetor cleaner to work best. Others take the easy yet "not so nice" route of finding the and squashing them. That might be easiest when you have so many spread around.

Sweep them up and put them in a bag in the bin... Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Hi - Last week my husband found what he says were about "10,000" maggots in the garage. They came from the trash cans which we have to keep in the garage. They had spread throughout the entire garage: under shoes, towels, boxes, even paint cans. Unfortunatley we were heading out on vacation later that day for 4 days.... We probably should have cancelled. Before we left, we swept out the garage and sprayed an entire can of raid, and then crossed our fingers.... Needless to say the thought of opening our garage to a horror scene after our trip lingered in the back of our heads for the entire weekend "getaway". We ended up being in luck, I think, because there were no new maggots, just more that we discovered last night when we got home. We hadn't check every corner last week because we were rushing... the problem is that now there are still a hundred or so left scattered throughout the garage and they are in the pupa stage. I read online that they are indestructible in this stage. Is this true? We sprayed some organic pesticides over the floor and my husband took the day off from work today to clean out the garage. Will this be enough? I really don't like the story about the guy with maggots in his head... will the flys try to get in the house once they hatch?!?!? Do you think the organic pesticide is enough to kill the pupa?

Hmmm, if you're having such a problem, you'll need to clean it out and try and prevent the flies from getting in.

Maybe put a fly trap of some sort near the cage?

Or visit your pet store and see why the cage is being targeted.

Ok, so I noticed there were maggots in the guinea pig cage, and I thought 'Ok, no big deal, it won't happen again, we've just been sooo busy, but next time we'll clean it sooner' So I clean it out and take the garbage upstairs, except that it thunderstorming outside, and lightning is almost touching the trees. So I set it in the garage. Big mistake. The maggots ate their way out. So I spent three hours cleaning up maggots. But the flies are back as soon as I cleaned out the cage. So I need help. What do I do that won't hurt my piggy but will kill those maggots?

I'm also curious about the whole "laying eggs in carpets". Flies tend to lay them in a food source (like rotting meat). But maybe there are types of flies that do it differently.

Thank you so much for creating this site! I came home this morning from working a night shift to find several little white worms in my dog's water bowl and one lonely guy wiggling around in an empty dog food bowl. Huh, gross. I noticed one dog snacking on something on the carpet, another worm (!) and called the vet in a panic. I picked several squirming guys up with a spoon put them in a ziplock bag and took them to the vet's office. The vet said they were maggots and 'big ones'. Another huh and feeling totally grossed out. I went home and noticed more on the kitchen floor. Grabbed them up with a bleach wipe and squished them. Then I did a search through my house and found more! On the linoleum in the kitchen, wood floor in the dining room and on the carpeted areas around the kitchen. Found a bunch near the sliding glass door and thought they might be attracted to light, but then found some scrunched in near the baseboards. Killed all that I could before going to bed. (Too tired to inspect my bed I slept on my dark chocolate colored couch.) I woke to do another search and found more! Then I figured I can't be the only person in the world to have had this happen to, so I Googled it and your site was the first to come up! Yeah, I'm not alone! but still have a serious situation. Now I'm off to Wally world to pick up some Raid to spray on the baseboards and floors. Then I'll vacuum, do a thorough cleaning of the house and hope for the best. I'd really like to do a Raid bomb but not at 10pm. Hopefully this works other wise I'll have to bomb the house. I wish I knew where they were coming from, but from what I read on another site it is common during the summer for flies to lay their eggs in the carpet and presto you've got maggots.

WOW! I would NOT like to be in your position.

I reckon your best bet is to probably somehow sweep them up into a bag/bin and drown them (or just throw the bag away after tying a knot in it).

Unfortunately maggots aren't my only problem, i have a few raccoons who have figured out that my garbage, is their favorite garbage. The pudgy pests have figured out that they can easily life the lids of my bins. They also seem to have realized that their teeth are nice and sharp so if they can't lift em, they chew at them until they can.

Of course this means that by the time morning comes my garbage has been torn apart and there are literally tens of thousands of maggots, in fact this morning I picked up the lid saw how many were on it dropped it and it was like a tidal wave of maggots floating threw the air.

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on the best way to get rid of a lot of maggots at one time is.

First things first, as a general rule, don't have Raid on all your surfaces. I'm sure you know, but for everybody reading this, you definitely don't want to be accidentally be eating anything contaminated with this.

Obviously if you're not spraying anywhere near food, that makes a difference, but don't go poisoning yourself.

It normally takes between a couple of days to a couple of weeks for a fly to form from a maggot. I'm not sure where your flies would be coming from. Possibly from outside? Or they have a food source somewhere inside and are living happily until you find the occasional fly wandering away?

We found maggots about 10 days ago that must have started in our bin in the utility room. We threw the contents away (obviously!) and got rid of all the maggots. Haven't seen a single once since then. Now, every day, we have a crop of small bluebottles. I am using Raid directly on them when I find them, and many of them are obviously dying even before I notice them, probably because there is so much Raid on all our surfaces. But just this morning I have collected and disposed of 15 bluebottles. We have taken the utility apart, moved the washing machine/dryer, checked cupboards, washed floors. How long do maggots take to become flies? What more can I do.

Thanks for the reassurance James. The nightmare is still continuing - I got up this morning only to find one in my *bed* - OMG, that has got to count as one of the worst experiences in my entire life. Admittedly it was dead, but it was just soooooo gross - it was actually part-maggot, part-half-formed fly, and to make it worse I didn't realize what it was straight away and picked it up with my *bare* hands..... cue another attack of the hysterics.

I don't think I shall ever feel safe here again - I just didn't want to come home from work today, the relief of being out of the house was so great. Silly isn't it as I know on an 'intellectual' level they are harmless and defenceless and I even feel a tiny bit sorry for them, but I just *cannot* and never will be able to tolerate them!

Dawn (ps this forum is just great, keep up the good work!)

I would say just vacuum the carpet and you should be fine. It will probably take a few days until they become flies.

Don't worry about them. Just ensure there's no food source and you should be fine. If you REALLY want to spend money and ensure they're gone, steam treat your carpet. But I really doubt you would need to do that.

Hi all,

I'm Dawn from England. And I did something very, very lazy and stupid last week. I left a bowl of uneaten dog food out in my flat for days, and it was hot, and I noticed a strange smell..... eventually I guessed it might be the dog food so I picked up the bowl to smell it and there, literally *inches* from my eyes was a mass of maggots <shudder>........

Now for 38 of my 38 years I have been petrified, appalled and disgusted by these creatures in equal measures. So you can guess how horrifed I was. I threw the bowl down - yes, another 'clever' thing to do, with the consequence they splattered all over my carpet.

After having hysterics down the phone to my mom I decided to kill them with boiling water. This did the trick immediately thank God. I then could not bear to get near their corpses so I hoovered them up, emptied the hoover bag, and have spent most of today disinfecting everywhere I think they might have touched.

My problem is - I can't stop thinking they're still hanging round in some nook or cranny. I feel like my entire flat is now contaminated. I literally want to move out, leave all of my possessions and start fresh somewhere these things have never been. I'm terrified to touch anything and I can't eat inside my flat as I'm so repulsed by the whole episode.

Ok so I know I sound like a psycho and i know it was all my fault, but has anyone got any advice as to how I can start to live my life again?!!!! If the odd one is still around in my flat how long will it stay in its horrible maggoty stage before it becomes a fly? And will there be maggot eggs in my carpet that could still hatch? Oh man...............

Many thanks indeed,

Dawn

Hi

Maggots don't lay eggs. Don't be afraid of them.

If they wandered away from the bird, you would probably have seen them by now...

I'm sure you're all in the clear.

I've just been out to my wheelie bin and as I've lifted the lid a great mass of maggots have dropped into the bin off the inside if the lid. The big ones are crawling out and dropping off the edge to the ground and there seems to be millions of them of all sizes actually in the bin. There are also castors all around the bin on the ground. The smell is actually rancid. Thank god for this website as I'm going to try and find one of those foggers for flies and drop it into the bin. Let's see how they like that!! I've also emptied half a can of Raid into the bin, but I'm yet to go and look at what effect thats had.

I'll let you know how I get on

I recently left my basement window open, and when I went down there the following day I noticed a bird in my basement had gotten in through the window. I am really afraid of any living creature that isn't human or a cat. So I closed my basement door until I could find someone to help me get the bird out. The next day I got help but we did not see/hear the bird anymore so I assumed it must have found it's way out. 2 days later I went down to wash clothes and smelled an awful smell. I figured it had to be the bird dead somewhere, which it was. When I found it it was crawling with FAT maggots. I got help disposing of it and the maggots, then threw anything that was near it in the trash. I then washed that area of the floor with bleach. My question is, can/will the maggots wander away from the dead bird? Or do they stay near it? Do they lay eggs? If so how can I get rid of all the eggs? By disposing of the bird and every visible maggot, am I in the clear? If I bleach everything in the basement, will I be rid of them? Someone please help me I am a prisoner in my own home afraid to enter my basement. I can not afford to hire an exterminator. Thank you very much.
