This is by far the most comprehensive source of maggot killing knowledge assembled on the whole of the internet... Other than this site I was only able to locate a couple other brief articles which lacked any real comprehensive solution to the problem. I would also like to note that I have discovered what caused this infestation. Apparently my wife had purchased some "seafood salad" one day and found that it was spoiled when she tried to eat it... Among other things in this mix there was squid, crab, shrimp, and scallops. They were all pre-cooked, but when she threw it away it went straight into the outside garbage can... No bag, no seal of any kind... and there it sat for 5 days in humid conditions at temperatures well in the upper eighties by day. I went to put my garbage out at the curb and found one of the cans totally covered with 1/4 - 1/2 inch maggots. I am a grown man and little bothers me in the natural world, but I just could not move that can with a moving cloth of slimy, disgusting larvae all over it. My first thought was to put on a thick pair of work gloves... I still couldn't stand it as I lifted the can and numerous maggots began to fall off onto my shoes and the cuffs of my pants. I retreated inside to work out a plan. I decided to fill a scrub bucket full of hot water and soap and pour the contents all over the can. I then returned to my home to wait for them to die/disperse. When I returned to the can I discovered that the two hundred or so that I had washed off with my soapy water were now charging right for my front door. They had squirmed their way across the sidewalk and right up my steps!!! Not only did this not work it drew another hundred or so out of the can to take the originals' place... That's when I realized that I was dealing with something much larger than I had originally anticipated. I then turned to the internet and discovered this excellent site and did some reading. Since it was around 2am at the time I decided to go with the easiest possible solution. I boiled about 20 gallons of water and poured in a gallon of bleach and dumped that all over them then went back inside to let them perish... To my horror and frustration when I returned in another 1/2 hour they were STILL squirming with little difference in their movement... maybe more than before... I returned to this site and did another hour's worth of reading and then jumped in my car and made for walmart like there was no tomorrow... I ended up with a bottle of lice shampoo... 2 cans of carburetor cleaner, and a can of RAID wasp killer... When I returned home it seemed that even more had surfaced from the can... Their front was advancing right up my door! I wasted no time and sprayed them all down with the lice shampoo... after 10 minutes I returned to several dead and most of them moving around sluggishly in the gel... I wasn't taking any chances however and popped open the RAID and gave them all a good dowsing of that which took out at least 1/2 of them... I went through a can of the carb cleaner spot spraying (which seemed to kill them on contact) until there was no more movement... I repeated this on the inside of the can and lid after finally being able to drag it to the curb. To my surprise it appears that most of them had indeed come out upon my initial attacks! The sun has risen and it is now 6am... It's been a long night, and I may have lost the first few battles, but I surely won the war. I've spent the last hour cleaning up the mess of chemicals and corpses in my wake and managed to have it all done before the garbage men come to collect the trash. From this experience I would like to pass on the following information to all those troubled souls that find themselves in a similar situation:</p> <p>1. DO NOT just dump water or bleach on them...even if it's strictly hot water from the tap... This will NOT kill them... It will only make them more aggressive!</p> <p>2. Boiling water is decent to stagger them, and if that's all you have may be effective after many, many gallons...</p> <p>3. The lice shampoo stopped them in their tracks and stunned them beyond recovery, but didn't kill them on contact... and was the most expensive item in my arsenal. ($8)</p> <p>4. RAID wasp killer has GREAT range so you don't have to get too close and worry about any flying off and on to your person, and seemed to do a decent job of killing them. ($4)</p> <p>5. The carburetor cleaner lacked the range of the RAID, however it was instantaneously deadly to the maggots... It was also the cheapest! Close things like chip and crisp bags up tightly with food pegs or clips. </p> <p>Always rinse out bottles and containers, especially beer and juice bottles since the rotting fermenting smell attracts flies. </p> <p>I take my rubbish out once or twice a week since we have a large bin and don't cook very often. But in the summer the 'fresh' rubbish can lead to maggots when we aren't careful so I've taken to putting my fresh rubbish (fruit and vegetable peels, uneaten food, teabags, off food etc) into smaller plastic bags and making sure that the bag doesn't have any holes and tying it tightly. That way, there is no rotting food smell to attract the flies and no maggots! However, this only works when everyone in the household practices this and unfortunately for me, one of my housemates still doesn't and I still end up with maggots occasionally, I make her take out the trash then.</p> <p>When all else fails, force or hot hot hot boiled water will always work since it the hot water will kill maggots of all stages. Unfortunately it warmed up a few days later and the flies came back. I went away for the weekend and came back to a pot of rotten fermenting soup since my housemate was too lazy to empty and clean the pot and also didn't close the lid properly so sure enough, there were young maggots crawling about. Thankfully they didn't get out of the pot. </p> <p>So today I'm cleaning the pot. I would have thrown it away if it wasn't one of my expensive pots and worth the trouble and effort. Now, I absolutely hate maggots, it's one of my phobias so this is a big deal for me, I'm quite annoyed at my housemate since she wouldn't clean it and I feel that it was her job since I not only made the food but bought all the ingredients and she ate more than her share. But she won't and I want to keep the pot so I'm going to have to do it :(</p> <p>So this is how I went about it. Enclosed shoes and rubber gloves on, kettle of boiling water ready, I took the pot into the bathroom and poured hot water all over the lid until it was too hot to touch (so the maggots clinging onto the lid dropped back in) and all around the sides (so the ones crawling around the sides also dropped in) then placed the pot back on the stove until I could hear the liquid boiling for a good 10-15mins so all the little squirming buggers were good and dead (or so I think, I haven't checked). I have more freshly boiled water ready and will pour more over the lid and around the sides before I start pouring the rotten muck, little by little, into the toilet and flush it away. Will keep some extra hot water to rinse whatever is left clinging inside the pot.</p> <p>Hopefully it all works out. At least they should be dead so I don't have to deal with live squirming things. They're spraying their house and now they're all going to run over here!" So I gotta beat them little buggers down before they migrate over here. I'll lose my mind if they do! That's why later on today I'm going to Wally-World and picking up some Extra Strength Home Defense spray and spraying down the outside and inside. Since it's safe for animals. I called the health department because aside from the maggots, roaches and most recently TOADS (Yes yes.. I said toads.) I also have a problem with black mold here in my gear room. But since it's on base, they can't help.</p> <p>I'm so fed up and disgusted with this place. They charge an absurd amount of monies for a peice of crud they call a "House" and you never recieve any maitnence help. Now I have to worry about this!? UGH!
