Thanks for sharing this with us. It was really interesting.

Any chance you'd like to right up a post/article on the benefits and dangers/risks of using carb cleaner? I'd love to put it up on the front page of this website, but I don't really know much about it. You also have a GREAT way of writing.

The more info, the better, and it will be viewed by about 2,000 people a day I reckon, (hence the need for a lot of info on the risks :-) )

Hello fellow maggot fighters,

Just wanted to share my story and what worked best for me. It was just 3 hours ago when I went to take out the trash. Upon opening the trash bin I saw hundreds of maggots crawling around inside. I had no experience with this before and was absolutely disgusted.

First, I tried raid, the kind that kills ants. I sprayed all of the maggots down real good and went inside to collect the rest of the trash. About 5-10 minutes later I go back outside to check and they are still alive and desperately trying to crawl out of the can. I had no more raid and didn't really know what to do. I tried a couple of other things like scrubbing bubbles (foaming bathroom cleaner) and pouring bleach all over them. This pushed all the maggots to the bottom of the trash bin and I thought I had won. I took my can to the curb and let it sit. I let it rest for 15 minutes and checked back on the bin and they were back!! Crawling up from the depths...These things are resilient! I was clueless. I thought to use the carb/throttle body cleaner I had in my garage but figured it would just make it easier for them to climb out by degreasing the sides of the trash bin. It is a good thing I was wrong! After finding this site (thank you to the creators!!!!) and reading through some things on it (thank you to the people who posted!!!!!), I quickly grabbed the carb cleaner.

The carb/throttle body cleaner worked extremely well, killing the maggots within 10 seconds of contact. I covered pretty much every surface inside the bin and shot down the strays on and around the bin and where it had been. After a couple minutes not a single one was left moving!

Please use caution and read all of the warnings on the label before you use this stuff, it can be harmful. You can probably find it at any store that stocks automotive parts for a couple bucks: walmart, pep boys, advance auto parts, etc. The specific brand I used was Valvoline SYN carb/throttle body cleaner. I hope that helps!

Again a big thank you to the creators of this website and the people who have posted their stories!!! I am now maggot free and have the knowledge to stay that way!! :)

Hmmm, good luck. I would love it if you could come back and write up what you found worked and what didn't and how it went for you.

I'm also curious about the whole "laying eggs in carpets". Flies tend to lay them in a food source (like rotting meat). But maybe there are types of flies that do it differently.

Thank you so much for creating this site! I came home this morning from working a night shift to find several little white worms in my dog's water bowl and one lonely guy wiggling around in an empty dog food bowl. Huh, gross. I noticed one dog snacking on something on the carpet, another worm (!) and called the vet in a panic. I picked several squirming guys up with a spoon put them in a ziplock bag and took them to the vet's office. The vet said they were maggots and 'big ones'. Another huh and feeling totally grossed out. I went home and noticed more on the kitchen floor. Grabbed them up with a bleach wipe and squished them. Then I did a search through my house and found more! On the linoleum in the kitchen, wood floor in the dining room and on the carpeted areas around the kitchen. Found a bunch near the sliding glass door and thought they might be attracted to light, but then found some scrunched in near the baseboards. Killed all that I could before going to bed. (Too tired to inspect my bed I slept on my dark chocolate colored couch.) I woke to do another search and found more! Then I figured I can't be the only person in the world to have had this happen to, so I Googled it and your site was the first to come up! Yeah, I'm not alone! but still have a serious situation. Now I'm off to Wally world to pick up some Raid to spray on the baseboards and floors. Then I'll vacuum, do a thorough cleaning of the house and hope for the best. I'd really like to do a Raid bomb but not at 10pm. Hopefully this works other wise I'll have to bomb the house. I wish I knew where they were coming from, but from what I read on another site it is common during the summer for flies to lay their eggs in the carpet and presto you've got maggots.

I ended up dumping two jugs of bleach on them, they all died, and it seems to be keeping the raccoons away(unless they got in and just went somewhere to die)

@James: Unfortunately my town demands we use their $20 garbage bags or they just refuse to pick it up.

WOW! I would NOT like to be in your position.

I reckon your best bet is to probably somehow sweep them up into a bag/bin and drown them (or just throw the bag away after tying a knot in it).

Unfortunately maggots aren't my only problem, i have a few raccoons who have figured out that my garbage, is their favorite garbage. The pudgy pests have figured out that they can easily life the lids of my bins. They also seem to have realized that their teeth are nice and sharp so if they can't lift em, they chew at them until they can.

Of course this means that by the time morning comes my garbage has been torn apart and there are literally tens of thousands of maggots, in fact this morning I picked up the lid saw how many were on it dropped it and it was like a tidal wave of maggots floating threw the air.

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on the best way to get rid of a lot of maggots at one time is.

Hi

Maggots don't lay eggs. Don't be afraid of them.

I recently left my basement window open, and when I went down there the following day I noticed a bird in my basement had gotten in through the window. I am really afraid of any living creature that isn't human or a cat. So I closed my basement door until I could find someone to help me get the bird out. The next day I got help but we did not see/hear the bird anymore so I assumed it must have found it's way out. 2 days later I went down to wash clothes and smelled an awful smell. I figured it had to be the bird dead somewhere, which it was. When I found it it was crawling with FAT maggots. I got help disposing of it and the maggots, then threw anything that was near it in the trash. I then washed that area of the floor with bleach. My question is, can/will the maggots wander away from the dead bird? Or do they stay near it? Do they lay eggs? If so how can I get rid of all the eggs? By disposing of the bird and every visible maggot, am I in the clear? If I bleach everything in the basement, will I be rid of them? Someone please help me I am a prisoner in my own home afraid to enter my basement. I can not afford to hire an exterminator. Thank you very much.

Thank you for your kind words James. If it hadn't been for this site I don't know what I would have done. Thank you very much for compiling this tome of information on the topic! This is by far the most comprehensive source of maggot killing knowledge assembled on the whole of the internet... Other than this site I was only able to locate a couple other brief articles which lacked any real comprehensive solution to the problem. I would also like to note that I have discovered what caused this infestation. Apparently my wife had purchased some "seafood salad" one day and found that it was spoiled when she tried to eat it... Among other things in this mix there was squid, crab, shrimp, and scallops. They were all pre-cooked, but when she threw it away it went straight into the outside garbage can... No bag, no seal of any kind... and there it sat for 5 days in humid conditions at temperatures well in the upper eighties by day. I'm glad that you enjoyed my story and I hope that my suggestions will help others faced with this disgusting ordeal...

Best Regards!

Well, it happened nearly six hours ago. I went to put my garbage out at the curb and found one of the cans totally covered with 1/4 - 1/2 inch maggots. I am a grown man and little bothers me in the natural world, but I just could not move that can with a moving cloth of slimy, disgusting larvae all over it. My first thought was to put on a thick pair of work gloves... I still couldn't stand it as I lifted the can and numerous maggots began to fall off onto my shoes and the cuffs of my pants. I retreated inside to work out a plan. I decided to fill a scrub bucket full of hot water and soap and pour the contents all over the can. I then returned to my home to wait for them to die/disperse. When I returned to the can I discovered that the two hundred or so that I had washed off with my soapy water were now charging right for my front door. They had squirmed their way across the sidewalk and right up my steps!!! Not only did this not work it drew another hundred or so out of the can to take the originals' place... That's when I realized that I was dealing with something much larger than I had originally anticipated. I then turned to the internet and discovered this excellent site and did some reading. Since it was around 2am at the time I decided to go with the easiest possible solution. I boiled about 20 gallons of water and poured in a gallon of bleach and dumped that all over them then went back inside to let them perish... To my horror and frustration when I returned in another 1/2 hour they were STILL squirming with little difference in their movement... maybe more than before... I returned to this site and did another hour's worth of reading and then jumped in my car and made for walmart like there was no tomorrow... I ended up with a bottle of lice shampoo... 2 cans of carburetor cleaner, and a can of RAID wasp killer... When I returned home it seemed that even more had surfaced from the can... Their front was advancing right up my door! I wasted no time and sprayed them all down with the lice shampoo... after 10 minutes I returned to several dead and most of them moving around sluggishly in the gel... I wasn't taking any chances however and popped open the RAID and gave them all a good dowsing of that which took out at least 1/2 of them... I went through a can of the carb cleaner spot spraying (which seemed to kill them on contact) until there was no more movement... I repeated this on the inside of the can and lid after finally being able to drag it to the curb. To my surprise it appears that most of them had indeed come out upon my initial attacks! The sun has risen and it is now 6am... It's been a long night, and I may have lost the first few battles, but I surely won the war. I've spent the last hour cleaning up the mess of chemicals and corpses in my wake and managed to have it all done before the garbage men come to collect the trash. From this experience I would like to pass on the following information to all those troubled souls that find themselves in a similar situation:

1. DO NOT just dump water or bleach on them...even if it's strictly hot water from the tap... This will NOT kill them... It will only make them more aggressive!

2. Boiling water is decent to stagger them, and if that's all you have may be effective after many, many gallons...

3. The lice shampoo stopped them in their tracks and stunned them beyond recovery, but didn't kill them on contact... and was the most expensive item in my arsenal. ($8)

4. RAID wasp killer has GREAT range so you don't have to get too close and worry about any flying off and on to your person, and seemed to do a decent job of killing them. ($4)

5. The carburetor cleaner lacked the range of the RAID, however it was instantaneously deadly to the maggots... It was also the cheapest! ($1.50)

Good luck... and remember... prevention is much easier and less expensive than dealing with the problem when it comes home to roost!

Pour hot water with the chemical of your choice absolutely everywhere. I've found that the best way of getting rid of maggots is intense heat as it will not only kill maggots of all ages and sizes but any remaining eggs and any pupae as well as possibly flushing out the source of food. Repeat a few times and they should go away.

Yesterday morning I woke to find a WHOLE ARMY of maggots crawling on my kitchen floor. EVERY inch of the floor was covered by maggots, they was crawling out the front door. They was crawling from all directions so it was very hard to see where they were coming from.

A day from yesterday I did a spring clean in the kitchen (not for the maggots) and they was there the next morning, only a few. So I swept the Kitchen thoroughly but then I woke with the army of maggots. That day I thought it could be the mat we have in the kitchen because it is very revolting but I took it out the day I swept. They starting invading our kitchen ever since we started eating fried rice. We think it may be from the stove, the floor is spotless but they may be falling out from the bottom of the stove.

They come out from the cleanest of places which is very puzzling. They are there every morning so far. And they always march out the front door.

Oh rest assured I will. It's ridiculous how many times I battle these disgusting, repulsive and reclusive little buggers. You'd think for the monies I pay here they'd do something about these problems. But NOOOOO... *Pish Posh* That's what I have to say to them. Plus I'd hate to take them away from their "hard days at work", with their long hours of myspace and Pocket tanks to assist me in my horrendous and time consuming tasks. ^.^

Feel free to write as much as you like, it's REALLY interesting :-)

I do wish more people wrote down about their experiences, because before the site was set up here, there were around 400 stories that both amazed and TOTALLY grossed me out...

Come back as often as you like, and GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for responding so quickly. I tried to respond 3 days ago, and wrote a nice little paragraph but had to go to the store and came back to see it timed out. Then I had trouble logging in. LOL.. just my luck. I've noticed that not alot of ppl respond back to you. How rude...

So... The Maggot-Mania...I finally got rid of them. I used a helicopter lubricant, mixed with hot water in a jar with a lid, and washed every floor in this place with bleach water. One thing I hate and love about this house is there is absolutly NO CARPETS in this here. Think about how much worse it would of been with carpets! UGH I don't even want to think about it!!! But it would be nice to wake up in the morning to nice, plush, soft carpets under my toes instead of a cold, unforgiving floor. *BURRRR*

Anywhoo,
I get them about once a month. I'm lucky if I don't get them. It's just hard not to on this base. The conditions are perfect for them with the humidity and unlocked garbge containers. Makes me sick. I hate bugs in my house. I HATE BUGS! Meh, what are ya gunna do ya know?! Can't beat them all. I've noticed around 5 minutes ago the Terminex guys next door, and all I can think is, "Oh great! They're spraying their house and now they're all going to run over here!" So I gotta beat them little buggers down before they migrate over here. I'll lose my mind if they do! That's why later on today I'm going to Wally-World and picking up some Extra Strength Home Defense spray and spraying down the outside and inside. Since it's safe for animals. I won't use anything that will harm animals or the enviroment.

Well James I'm writing a novel here. So I'll be on my way. Just count on me writing in again with other methods that I've used since this is a reoccouring issue here at my home.

^.^ We'll be speaking again.

THAT is one HECTIC story!!!

I really hope you get things sorted out.

Why are you on an army base?

I can't believe this! How disgusting! I live on a military base in GA and this is the third time I've had to battle maggots here in my house. It's not ehough that I have numerous things to stress about and worry myself sick over...but now this!? AGAIN!? So I wake up this morning oblivious to the maddness unfolding within the walls of my home. I'm very weak and sickly and my muscles burn all the time like I just got done running a darn marathon...so just the smallest tasks leave me in pain and exhausted.

Anywhoo,
As I woke, my dog (Bandit) was eating something. *Sigh* What could he be eating now? I looked at him and told him to "Spit it out" and when he did, it looked familliar. A MAGGOT!? CRAP! I carefully and reluctently made my way over the the light switch and flicked it on. And there, on the floor, was a sea of maggots! I almost threw up and started to cry.

They were in the kitchen, the living room, in the dining room... even now...as I write this I have to step away from the keyboard to cautiously pick them up. I've talked to the front office here on base...and recieved NO HELP. These ppl won't even help me change a light bulb. I called the health department because aside from the maggots, roaches and most recently TOADS (Yes yes.. I said toads.) I also have a problem with black mold here in my gear room. But since it's on base, they can't help.

I'm so fed up and disgusted with this place. They charge an absurd amount of monies for a peice of crud they call a "House" and you never recieve any maitnence help. Now I have to worry about this!? UGH! I've been picking them up and putting them in a jar with a lid and put some water in it to attempt to dround them. It seems to be working so far...but I keep finding more. I have no idea where they are comming from. The last time I found them in my house, they were comming inside from the backyard from the trash cans. The tops of the cans have hols chewed in them from squirrels and possibly coons, and the back yard was Overrun with the nasty little creatures of disgustingness...

I wish I didn't have to deal with this. I'm so tired and I'm hurting. All I wanna do is relax...But I'm freaked out and it feels like they're crawling all over me. GROSS!
