You shouldn't need to worry about maggots in mass up in the attic. When a fly lay's it's eggs, which usually looks like tiny pieces of rice, it's takes anywhere from 8-20 hours before they hatch into the disgusting little wigglers that they are. But it sounds like you were lucky in finding them when you did, but with their intended food source gone, and nothng else to ustain them, they will die quickly. I get maggots about twice a month if I'm lucky. I have them right now in my outside trash bin. And let me tell you, Monday can't come sooner! I'm sorry that you had to go through your horrific incident of terror in your bathroom...But at least to identified the problem. Sorry for posting *James*, I'll shut up now. lol...He's much more knowledgeable than I am and this is his site. =)And for good measure I'd put a few traps up there in the area that you found the mouse. Mice like to have little trails/routs that they stick to when traveling...Good luck with your attic expiditions! Wear a face mask!

So last night before bed, I went to the bathroom. As I was sitting there, I noticed what I thought was a little worm crawling on the floor. I scanned the floor and saw there was more. I hollered to my spouse 'Uh, dude, we have a problem!!!' He came upstairs to see what I was yelling about, and I carefully made my way out of the bathroom - didn't wanna step on any...yuck!
So, using toilet paper, we picked them up one by one and once we saw we had them all picked up, more appeared. They were falling from the bathroom fan!!
My spouse got a chair, and proceeded to unplug, and pull down the fan. Well, low and behold, there was a dead mouse (though it was a bit bigger then a mouse) lodged in the fan blades!! We finally figured out why the fan wasn't working as well as it was a few days ago!!
He flushed the dead mouse down the toilet and sprayed perioxide over the fan to wipe it down and disinfect it. We put a bucket on the floor, below the fan and covered the bottom with bleach. This morning when we woke, we found 10 dead maggots floating in the bucket and one crawling on the floor.
Tonite my hunny is gonna crawl into the attic to see what else is up there - we're not sure what to expect - how many more maggots can be there if the dead animal is gone??

Another thing I should mention is that these were not full grown, white creamy colored maggots. They were very small, and clear.

Not sure how we can disinfect the attic now.....

Thanks!

Joanne
